The Dos and Don’ts of a Large Tile Installation

Here's a concise list of the Do's and Don’ts when installing large tiles:

The Do's

  1. Do Plan the Layout: Measure the space carefully and plan the tile arrangement to minimize cuts and ensure symmetry.
  2. Do Use the Right Mortar: Use a high-quality thin-set mortar designed for large-format tiles to ensure strong adhesion. We prefer Laticrete products (https://www.laticrete.com/en/our-products/tile-and-stone-installation/tile-and-stone-adhesives)

  3. Do Back Butter the Tiles: Apply mortar to both the floor and the back of the tile (back buttering) to prevent voids and ensure a solid bond.
  4. Do Use a Tile Leveling System: Use a leveling system to maintain consistent tile height and avoid lippage.
  5. Do Maintain Even Grout Lines: Use tile spacers to ensure consistent grout lines and proper alignment.
  6. Do Work in Small Sections: Spread mortar in small sections at a time to prevent it from drying before tiles are placed.
  7. Do Ensure the Surface is Level and Smooth: Verify the surface is clean, flat, and smooth before starting installation for better tile adhesion.
  8. Do Allow Proper Drying Time: Let the mortar and grout fully set before walking on or using the space.

The Don’ts

  1. Don’t Skip Surface Preparation: Never install tiles on an uneven or dirty surface. Preparation is key to a successful installation.
  2. Don’t Rush the Process: Take your time to ensure each tile is placed correctly. Rushing may lead to uneven tiles and mistakes.
  3. Don’t Ignore Tile Lippage: Ensure tiles are level and avoid shifting them once placed. Use a leveling system to reduce lippage (height differences).
  4. Don’t Walk on Wet Tiles: Avoid walking on tiles before the adhesive has set to prevent shifting or misalignment.
  5. Don’t Use Too Much Mortar: Don’t apply excessive mortar; it can cause tiles to shift or become uneven.
  6. Don’t Forget Expansion Joints: Leave space for expansion joints around the perimeter to allow for natural movement.
  7. Don’t Install in Extreme Conditions: Avoid installing tiles in extremely high or low temperatures, or in high humidity, as this can affect mortar and grout setting.
  8. Don’t Grout Too Soon: Wait until the mortar has fully cured before grouting to ensure the tiles remain secure.
  9. Don’t Forget to Check for Flatness: Ensure the floor or wall is level before installation to avoid visual defects once the tiles are laid.

Following these dos and don’ts will help ensure a professional and long-lasting large tile installation!
